Self-builders’ guide to Heritage Week

From the 18th to the 26th August 2018 it’s Heritage Week in ROI. Here’s a list of activities that might appeal to self-builders interested in traditional building methods.

Traditional Building Skills Days in Letterkenny, Co Donegal. Sean Brogan of Tir Conaill Conservations will, weather permitting, demonstrate the repair of an old stone wall outside, restructure a traditional outside drain and restore a sash window. Free. Traditional building working party hosted by the Society for Protection of Ancient Buildings (S.P.A.B.) Ireland in Killinaboy, Co Clare. Your chance to get hands-on and have a go at conservation practices for historic masonry buildings, practical workshops will teach skills like hot mixed lime usage, as well as alternative wall capping techniques. €40 / €25 concession. Introduction to blacksmithing in Co Wexford to create your own poker, candle holder or other functional piece of hardware within the confines of a site-specific forge. Free. Woodworking techniques in Letterfrack, Co Galway. Free. Tile making in Dublin suitable for ages 5 to 12. Free. Basket weaving with willow in Mullaghbane (NI). £10.
