Roll out of renovation grants extended

The adaptation grant to extend your home if you are elderly or have a serious medical condition is more now readily accessible thanks to a budget increase.

In this article we cover:

  • What the grant is
  • Who qualifies
  • How much you can get
  • Funding allocations for 2023

The Housing Adaptations for Older People and People with a Disability grants have seen their budget increased by 6 per cent to €59.8 million as compared to 2016, the ROI Department of Housing announced today (29 May 2017).

The move should help subsidise an additional 2,000 extension and refurbishment projects to bring the total renovations to 10,000 this year.

The scheme consists of three components with grants of up to €30,000 available for an Adaptation for People with a Disability, up to €8,000 for Housing aid for Older People and up to €6,000 for mobility aids.

All applications are prioritised according to medical need, often based on the assessment of an Occupational Therapist.

The means test requires that the household earn less than €60,000 per year and for the Housing Aid for Older People grant you must be aged 66 or more (depending on the circumstances the local authority may however wave this requirement).

More grants are available in Ireland, including free energy upgrades for those in receipt of some welfare payments.

Update May 2023: The allocation for 2023 will result in 12,300 grants for older people and disabled people, to facilitate them living independently in their own homes

The total funding amounts to €83.125 million for the Housing Adaptation Grants for Older and Disabled people for 2023. This is a 2.3 per cent increase on the initial 2022 funding allocation and represents a continuation of the year-on-year increases in the grant since 2014.

Grant amounts remain unchanged, 80 per cent of which comes from exchequer funding through the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage and 20 per cent from local authorities.
