Grants for Homeowners in Cumbria

If you’re building a new home or renovating your existing home in Cumbria there are several national and local grants and schemes that could help  help with costs.

Self-build and Custom Housebuilding Grant

  • Cumberland Council is using some of its self-build funding to support individuals Part 1 of its self-build and custom housebuilding register.
  • You can apply for a grant of up to £2,000 to help cover planning application and building control fees.
  • To qualify, you must be on Part 1 of the register and agree to use the council’s planning and building control services.
  • The council may also award retrospective grants if:
  • You’d now qualify for Part 1 of the register
  • You’ve used the council’s services for planning or building control
  • Your planning permission was granted on or after 17 October 2018 when the scheme began

Warm Homes: Local Grant

  • Provides free energy saving upgrades for low income, mains gas or off grid households.
  • Energy performance upgrades: up to £15,000 for insulation, draughtproofing, double/triple glazing, solar PV and battery storage – aiming to reach EPC Band C.
  • Low carbon heating: up to £15,000 for air or ground source heat pumps, particularly for off grid homes using oil or coal.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS)

  • Aims to help property owners in England and Wales switch from fossil fuel heating to low-carbon alternatives.
  • Grant amounts vary depending on the type of low-carbon heating system you install.
  • To qualify, you must own the property — this includes both homeowners and self-builders.
  • Your property needs a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) that’s less than 10 years old.
  • The grant isn’t available for hybrid systems or if you’re replacing an existing low-carbon heating system.
  • The scheme runs on a first-come, first-served basis and is open until 31 December 2027.

Energy Company Obligation (ECO4)

  • Offers support for insulation and heating upgrades, including boiler and radiator replacements.
  • Eligibility: households with income below £31,000, health conditions, or EPC ratings of D–G.

Disabled Facilities Grant

  • Provides financial assistance up to £30,000 for essential adaptations to help residents live independently.
  • Eligibility: homeowners or tenants requiring adaptations like stairlifts, level access showers, or ramps.

Affordable Housing Grants

  • Supports housing associations and community land trusts in developing affordable housing projects.
  • Eligibility: organisations addressing local housing needs with projects demonstrating good value for money.
