Heritage grants in NI now open

The Historic Environment Division in NI has launched a grant scheme on the 10th of May 2019 for repair work on historic buildings.

Applications will close on the 10th of June 2019.

As in previous years, support for repair work is capped at £50,000 per scheme. Details on how to apply are available from the Communities NI page.

For the Heritage Repair Scheme, most types of listed building, apart from lower grade churches, can apply. However according to the FAQ, only a small number of buildings which are not in the priority categories are likely to be supported.

Works include but are not limited to: roofs and chimneys, external walls, windows and doors, damp-proofing, and timber treatment floors joinery plasterwork land drainage (around the property only).

“We will only support items of repair and maintenance to the fabric of historic listed buildings and historic monuments under the Repair Stream where it can be demonstrated that the works are necessary and when it is carried out to the required standards.”

Professional fees can be subsidied up to 75 per cent, the FAQ goes on to say, and if the project is expected to cost more than £10,000 and is not solely for thatch repairs you must employ a professional advisor ‘accredited’ in architectural conservation to be eligible for support.

Information on the 2019/20 Heritage Repair scheme can be found on the Historic Environment Fund guidance and application forms page.

Projects that are offered the grant must complete the work by the 23rd March 2020 to get funding.
